Are We in the Middle of an Unprecedented Turbulent and Uncertain US-China Rivalry?
We are in the mid-summer of 2021. I am opening this blog series at the critical juncture when the US and China, the two big powers in the contemporary world, are becoming from full blown trade partners in the good old days, to global geo-political rivals nowadays.
What has happened? To the ordinary readers, all these changes may seem to come too quickly without enough warning signs or signals. In 2018 why the two nations got entangled into a grave trade war? Then came the Covid-19 pandemic, and then more disputes over cybersecurity, academic programs, human rights, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South China Sea, Xinjiang, and so on.
Such changes of course didn’t happen overnight. Hence I would like to take this opportunity to do some deep diving on those core concepts and practices involved of both countries, and consequently the differences, challenges and conflicts they bring about.
The uniqueness of this blog series is that I will restrain as possible from making subjective comments and judgements on either side. Rather I would try best to go as “the way it is”.
I believe such an approach may help us to better and more clearly understand things. By doing so, we are not saying…
