What’s the Attitude of Today’s Chinese Intellectuals towards Democracy?
There are three voices from China intellectuals about democracy. Pro democracy, pro authoritarianism or totalitarianism, and pro a hybrid approach.
Pro authoritarianism or totalitarianism is mostly from historical and cultural traditions. This is the way of governing the Chinese is very familiar with for thousands of years, although the degrees of such political establishment might vary from time to time, sometimes it was strong, sometime fair and sometimes weak. But by nature, the power was not from the people, and the government was not for the people.
What were such power and government about? About themselves. Then why some intellectuals still believe such old style politics? They feel that’s the way it is for China and China is different from the West in political development. It narrows down to the fundamental question: a nation is ruled by the many or ruled by the few? China to date seemingly still can’t crack this basic question.
We don’t need to spend much time on those pro-democracy, because it’s common sense for modern civilization. Why are there Chinese intellectuals who proclaim a hybrid approach in politics that may work best for China?
